Stephen Eskinazi, a wicketkeeper-batsman in today’s globalised game, is a product of three different countries, but that doesn’t seem to be hindering his growth as one of the most promising batters out there. He was born in Johannesburg, the son of an English mother and a Zimbabwean father.

Before his family relocated to Perth, he played for Hampshire junior teams and Western Australia U-17s and U-19s. When Chris Smith, the former Hampshire and England batsman, suggested him to Middlesex, they were able to sign him as a local player since he had a British passport in addition to an Australian one.

Eskinazi made his first-class debut against Yorkshire in September 2015 after contributing significantly to Middlesex’s 2nd XI, but it was the following summer that he most significantly outplayed his opponents, scoring his first-ever first-class century against Lancashire and producing a patient 157 a week later to lead Middlesex to an innings victory over the reigning champions Yorkshire, a crucial turning point in Middlesex’s eventual title victory.
