West Indies lost to Scotland in the Super Six round of the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, and as a result. They were unable to advance to the 2023 ODI World Cup. West Indies can no longer make the World Cup final because only the top two teams from that competition advance to India later this year.

They won the first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979, finished second in 1983. And will no longer be participating in the competition in the 13th edition.

Because only the top eight teams in the ODI Super League receive direct entry into the ten-team event. West Indies had to compete in the World Cup Qualifiers because they were ninth overall.

The top three teams from each of the two groups advanced to the Super Six stage of the qualifiers, where they were paired with Zimbabwe. The Netherlands, the United States, and Nepal in Group A. However, the teams that advanced would carry over any points they had gained from their performances against the other teams from their group who had also qualified.

West Indies won their first two matches in the qualifiers against the USA. And Nepal before falling to Zimbabwe and the Netherlands. They received zero points for that round even though they made it to the Super Six. Whilst Zimbabwe received four and the Netherlands received two. Sri Lanka earned four points to go to the Super Six from Group B, Scotland earned two, and Oman with none.

Then, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka each accrued six points by winning their opening Super Six games. To have a chance of catching up to Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka. West Indies needed to win all three of their games against Scotland, Sri Lanka, and Oman. But after their loss to Scotland, West Indies can only earn four points. Which is not enough to place in the top two and earn a ticket to India for the World Cup.

The downfall of West Indies in the limited-overs format is being continued with this setback. They almost made it into the final of the World Cup Qualifiers. When they narrowly defeated Scotland in a rain-delayed match to qualify for the 2019 ODI World Cup in England. After winning just one game (against Zimbabwe) and losing two (against Scotland and Ireland) of their group matches. They were unable to advance to the Super 12 round of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
